President Gordon Gurnik, David Morritt, owner of Morritt's Tortuga Club
and Resort, and Cherie Jeffries. Resort owner earns lifetime achievement award
David Morritt, owner of Morritt’s Tortuga Club and Resort, received the award at the resort on Thursday, 30 July. RCI’s North American president, Gordon Gurnik, and Orlando, Florida, representatives John Dishinger, Eugenio Macouzet and Cherie Jeffries presented the award in recognition of 20 years of vision, dedication and friendship and for providing thousands of memorable vacations to Morritt’s shareholders and members from around the world. RCI’s first lifetime achievement award recognised the resort for its high scores, great rates, a glowing report from shareholders, members and guests, and for weathering economic challenges over the past 20 years, “It says a great deal about the man who runs the property,” said Mr. Gurnik. It was an emotional moment for Mr. Morritt, who came to the island from London years ago. “When I stand here at the club and see all my friends and colleagues who have worked with me for more than nineteen years, that came through recessions, hurricanes, but all stood together ...the gift, the surprise and all those around me who put their money where their mouths were to help me build this baby, it makes me so proud,” he said. As someone who does not believe in receiving a present without giving a present, Mr. Morritt said his gift to Mr. Gurnik, a first-time visitor, was the experience he had envisioned 20 years ago on the beautiful coastal road. “Sir, I knew you took the same coastal road today and I knew you thought where the hell am I coming to, but I did that 22 years ago, and having landed up in front of Tortuga Club and thinking .. I am not going to stay at this place, (but) within fifteen minutes of walking out on the terrace overlooking the sea, I had bought the place ...,” said Mr. Morritt. “That was the same reason most of my friends and members that bought into the resort knew a good deal as soon as they saw the place” he added. *Reprinted from the Cayman Compass OnlineGlobal Resort Management, Inc.
