Cayman’s COVID-19 Update – 25 August 2020
The Cayman Islands Government held its latest press briefing on 25 August 2020 to provide an update on the further easing of restrictions due to the significantly reduced presence of COVID-19 within the Cayman Islands.
“The Cayman Islands, as of now, has effectively eliminated the virus from the Islands, one of very few countries that can say that,” said His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Martyn Roper at the briefing.

We have compiled the below highlights from the briefing that may be of interest to our overseas guests and owners.
Travel highlights:
- The Cayman Islands is planning a phased border reopening from 1 October 2020, beginning with visitors who have homes here, or access to homes here, and plan to stay for longer than two weeks.
- Protocols for the border opening programme, including monitoring individuals while in home isolation, are being finalised. A pilot programme will begin on 17 September to monitor a small number of people arriving on a BA flight from London.
- The requirements for inbound passengers of the pilot programme include:
- Participants will take a PCR test at their overseas destination 72 hours prior to departure. If negative, they will travel and be admitted into Cayman after receiving a Fitbit like bio-button which will monitor vitals such as respiration and temperature.
- They will also receive a geofencing device which will reveal if they are exceeding the perimeter of their isolation facility.
- Based on the results, further refinements will be made to the programme and a second trial will begin on 1 October when the borders initially open in a phased manner to a relatively small number of people.
- All inbound passengers to Cayman require written permission from TravelTime.

Staycations boost tourism industry
As borders remain closed, Cayman’s staycations have kickstarted a flagging tourism industry and offer a welcome break to locals after months of lockdown.

Morritt’s retains all staff during COVID-19 closure
Morritt’s Resort, a premier vacation club destination in the Cayman Islands for over 30 years, is pleased to announce that it has retained all staff despite the temporary closure of its property necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Along with the rest of the Cayman Islands hospitality and tourism industry, Morritt’s had to pause operations as soon as local COVID-19 restrictions came into place in March that closed the country’s borders to visitors and had residents sheltering in place.
“Our guests repeatedly tell us that some of the things they love so much about our resort, and what keeps them coming back, are the familiar faces and sense of community that we’ve developed,” said Bill Powers, Morritt’s General Manager.
“Many of our staff have been with us for decades and really are like family, so it was our top priority to ensure that their needs were met during this time.”
Morritt’s opted to keep each member of staff employed at full pay for the first seven weeks of the shut-down and at 75% pay thereafter.
Plans are in place for Morritt’s to offer a staycation package for residents on 26 June 2020, and staff will return to full pay at that time. Further details are available at https://morritts.com/staycation.
